Frequently Asked Questions

We get asked all sorts of things before, during, and after building projects. Here are some of the most common questions our customers ask — along with straightforward answers.
General Building & Renovation
Q: How much does it cost to renovate a house in Bath?
Costs depend on the size of the property and the type of work. A small kitchen refresh might be a few thousand pounds, while bigger renovations can run higher. We always provide a clear, itemised quote before starting.
Q: Do I need planning permission for a small extension?
Most small extensions fall under “permitted development,” but it depends on your property. We can advise you if permission is needed and help point you in the right direction.
Q: How do I find a reliable builder near me?
Look for builders with real photos of their own work, reviews from local clients, and clear communication. We don’t use stock photos — what you see on our site and socials is our own work.
Q: How long does it take to renovate a bathroom or kitchen?
A bathroom usually takes 2–3 weeks, while kitchens can vary depending on fittings and finishes. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe before work begins.
Plastering
Q: What’s the difference between skimming and replastering?
Skimming is a thin layer applied over existing plaster to freshen up the surface. Replastering involves removing old plaster and starting again — needed if the walls are in poor condition.
Q: How long does plaster take to dry before painting?
Typically 4–7 days for skim coats, up to 2 weeks for thicker plaster. It’s always best to let it fully dry before decorating.
Q: Can you plaster over old wallpaper?
No — wallpaper needs to come off first, otherwise plaster won’t stick properly.
Carpentry
Q: Can you build fitted wardrobes or custom shelving?
Yes. We design and build to fit your space — whether it’s alcove shelving, wardrobes, or bespoke cupboards.
Q: What type of wood is best for fitted furniture?
It depends on your budget and style. MDF is cost-effective and smooth for painting, while solid wood is more traditional and hard-wearing.
Q: Can you repair old doors or wooden floors?
Yes. From planing sticky doors to replacing damaged floorboards, we handle repairs as well as new installs.
Painting & Decorating
Q: How many coats of paint do I need on fresh plaster?
Usually a mist coat (diluted paint) plus two top coats for the best finish.
Q: Is it worth hiring a decorator instead of DIY?
It depends on the finish you want. DIY can save money, but a professional decorator saves time, achieves a neater result, and prepares surfaces properly.
Q: How often should I repaint the inside of my home?
Every 5–7 years on average, but high-traffic areas like hallways may need it sooner.
Tiling
Q: Can you tile over existing tiles?
Yes, if the old tiles are secure and the surface is flat. Otherwise, we recommend removing them first.
Q: What’s the best adhesive for outdoor tiling?
We use flexible, weather-resistant adhesives designed for external use, so tiles stay in place year-round.
Q: How do I stop grout going mouldy?
Good ventilation is key. We also seal grout to make it more resistant to stains and mould.
Small Jobs & Maintenance
Q: Do you take on small jobs like patching plaster or fixing doors?
Yes. No job is too small — whether it’s a quick repair or a bigger project.
Q: How quickly can you start work after a quote?
It depends on our schedule, but we aim to book in smaller jobs quickly. Larger projects may need more lead time.
